SUNYA / PROPOSED EVALUATION / 10 OCTOBER 2026

Devon Energy: Artificial lift

For an operator. A proposal based on a public-source case, not a company plan or a return forecast.

What the peer actually reports

Which assets?
1,000 wells by August 2026, including first legacy Coterra wells.
Who acts?
Closed-loop software adjusts lift settings in real time, 24/7.
What is reported?
2–3% production gain in the earlier 2025 gas-lift pilot. This is not a result for the later 1,000-well fleet.
Measurement period
Pilot: 2025; rollout counts: March–August 2026.
Comparison baseline
The source reports a pilot gain but does not give a controlled comparison for the expanded fleet.
Who reports it?
Operator earnings-call disclosures
Full costs
Full implementation and ongoing costs are not disclosed in the selected sources.
What remains unresolved?
The eligible-well denominator, later lift-type mix, fleet-wide benefit and detailed control limits are not disclosed.

What to establish before a trial

Start with a defined lift population, reliable well measurements and existing control access. Establish which changes require an engineer’s approval.

Suggested owner: Production engineering and field operations (proposed role, not a confirmed contact).

Measure: Incremental production, energy use and intervention cost per eligible well, against an agreed baseline.

Stop or redesign: Stop expansion if gains disappear in comparable wells, intervention work rises or control limits cannot be enforced.

Fix the baseline and measurement period before changing the work. Define approval, override and fallback responsibilities. Include integration, human review, ongoing service and support costs. Check whether the benefit lasts after the pilot.

Location: Devon’s operator-hosted Q2 2026 transcript (2026-08-05) says its closed-loop AI system autonomously optimized 1,000 wells in real time, 24/7; management said 200 wells in March and a path to broad deployment across >2,000 additional Permian wells, including first legacy Coterra wells. This supersedes the Q1 count of >850.
