SLB

13 AI initiative profiles for SLB across 8 departments, with evidence grades and source links. Strongest evidence: B · Primary publication — EPA-approved SOOFIE continuous methane monitoring with AI event detection.

What changed in practice?

Fewer wells received excess chemicals

17% before; 3% after. Nearly 1,400 producing Permian wells. 20 months; exact dates unknown.

SLB-reported $4.4m net savings covers the first nine months. Net-cost perimeter unknown; no complete ROI. Not an 82% reduction in chemical volume or total cost.

Overall accuracy concealed poorer coverage of rare drilling risks

89% overall accuracy; 44% equal-class recall. One GPT-2 comparator in Table 15; exact test population not established. Patent application published 5 March 2026; evaluation dates unknown.

Applicant-authored technical examples, not an independently validated field outcome. Other examples use differing cohorts and later model configurations. No measured reduction in drilling incidents or complete ROI.

High overall accuracy hid weaker rare-event detection

An SLB patent application reports 89% overall accuracy but 44% equal-class recall for its oil-and-gas GPT-2 comparator.

Table 15 reports the two different measures; 44% is not overall recall on all remarks. Exact test population and independent validation for that row are not established.

Limits: Applicant-authored technical examples, not an independently validated field outcome. Other examples use differing cohorts and later model configurations. No measured reduction in drilling incidents or complete ROI.

What holds up in SLB’s data and AI investment thesis?

SLB has a credible route to earning more from AI: it can put specialized models into software and operating workflows that customers already use. The public evidence supports a platform, engineering and governed-access advantage. It does not support treating every customer’s downhole data as an unrestricted SLB-owned training pool.

FY2025 Digital revenue was $2.660bn and adjusted EBITDA $928m (34.9% margin). Q3 2026 Digital revenue was $693m, adjusted EBITDA $228m and ARR $1.04bn. These are division-wide figures, not AI revenue or customer ROI. The CFO’s 2030 $1.8–2.0bn adjusted EBITDA and approximately $2bn ARR are ambitions, not results.

Limits: SLB disclaims ownership of Customer Data in its published online-service terms, while allowing specified service/product-improvement uses. Embedded Gen AI prompts and outputs require customer consent for training. Those clauses do not settle rights to every historical field dataset, derivative or negotiated contract. Digital includes software, operations, data licensing and professional services, with no AI-only profit bridge. Digital Operations overlaps Core segment reporting and is eliminated in consolidation. No demonstrated undervaluation or complete customer net cash ROI follows from these disclosures.

A chemistry-control result is useful, even though the operator is unnamed

SLB reports AI injection control and anomaly detection on nearly 1,400 producing Permian wells, with remote recalibration and weekly reviews.

Reported on-target injection: 63% to 92%; overtreatment: 17% to 3%; $4.4 million in net costs avoided in the first nine months. The supplier does not define the net-cost calculation or disclose a full-cost ROI.

Limits: Unnamed operator: no company attribution, core adoption or result-count addition. No controls, cost reconciliation, model error rate or approval/override policy. Do not infer a specific Permian producer or treat the figure as audited net cash ROI.

Automated cementing has moved beyond its first job

SLB says its cementing technology had passed 100 remote and automated jobs by July 2026, following first-quarter commercialization.

Job count shows reported operating reach. The release gives no controlled cycle-time, cement-quality, safety or cash-return comparison for this cohort.

Limits: Automation and remote operation do not establish machine learning or LLM use. Human supervision, control envelopes, fallback and override rules are not specified. The same release’s AI Production Studio is a pre-field demonstration environment, not proof that those capabilities ran on Shell’s well.

Earlier formation images are now reported from more than 50 wells

SLB says Retina has imaged more than 50 wells across 18 locations during its first year of commercial deployment.

Deployment and imaging specifications are not measured recovery, drilling-time savings or ROI. No comparative economics is disclosed.

Limits: No AI/ML mechanism or automatic control is identified. Keep as instrumentation context; do not transfer OQ Oman’s separate drilling-tool results to Retina.
